Dad, who’s the smartest Ninja Turtle?

This week my son and I have been sharing our passion for Ninja Turtles. However, this is something I have to have to be creative about, since we have a no guns or violent play rule in our household. (I know: Many of you are surprised I’m such a Ned Flanders!)

Turns out that there are lots of ways for my son and I (and mom) to love the Ninja Turtles together even if we don’t buy the toys and even if my wife and I maintain our commitment to non-violent play. After all, it’s about being creative and having fun. It’s about spending time together. It’s not about buying stuff and hurting people.

So here are my top four ways of rockin’ like the Ninja Turtles without spending a bunch of money and/or kicking people:

1. Run and jump and kick and tumble with headbands on.

2. Dress up and make costumes.

3. Make beautiful art. My kid loves, loves, loves art. And I look forward to taking him to see some of the stuff the original (and Italian) Michelangelo, Rafael, Leonardo, and Donatello painted, sculpted, and designed.

4. We can make beautiful art while running and jumping and tumbling with headbands on. (Haven’t tried this yet, so wish us luck!)

Those are some ideas for keeping Ninja Turtle romps all about being playful and spending good time together with my son.

I still can’t answer the little guy’s question, though. So feel free to let me know your thoughts on this crucial topic: Would you give the Rhodes Scholarship to Donatelo, Rafael, Leonardo, or Michalangelo?

Be Well!
